I contributed content to the social networking page of the class wiki. Since I researched social media for my term paper, I gained a lot of knowledge on the topic so I decided to add some information to the wiki. I added three paragraphs about the negative effects of social media on its users. I focused on the impact the social media can have on relationships and also touched on why people often feel compelled to check their social media pages. I added references for all of the content I added. I plan on adding at least one more paragraph to another wiki page that I'm interested in. I also want to make edits to existing content and upload images.

For example, in order to download a copy of a movie, a computer will look for other computers that have pieces of the movie, then download pieces of the file from several computers at once. Privacy in new media is a controversial topic. While most people use some form of new media and enjoy its benefits, the threat of our private information being exposed to people we would not want to see it is always there. The photos you post on social media can be used by someone else. For example, people can pretend that they are someone they are not by using photos from someone's social media page. Additionally, there are definitely ways to get around measures intended to maintain users' privacy. For example, when Snapchat was first introduced, many liked that it deleted photos after only 10 seconds. Because of this feature, people posted photos that they would not want to be available on the internet forever. However, users quickly realized that an easy away around this feature was to simply take a screenshot of a photo before it disappears. Baruch students are often frustrated by how difficult it is to get information from administration. For example, students often have questions about class registration, financial aid, and graduation. There are Facebook pages where students post questions about these things and their peers provide answers. However, these social media pages are run by students and there is no guarantee that the information that is shared is reliable since it is not coming directly from the college. I think it would be a good idea for the college to run similar social media pages where students can voice any questions and concerns and have them answered by staff. Many students often have the same questions, so a social media page would reduce the number of times that the staff would have to answer the same question. The article "Twitter Serves Up Ideas From Its Users" from The New York Times  explains how new media allows users to further innovate the technology that they are using. For example, everyone is  familiar with the @ feature on twitter and other platforms, which allows users to directly refer to someone. When you put @ in front of someone's name, Twitter creates a hyperlink to that person's Twitter page. I was surprised to learn that this feature actually originated from the users themselves. Before Twitter adopted this feature, users would put an @ symbol in front of someone's name when talking about them. Twitter saw how popular this was and decided to make the @ feature that creates a hyperlink to the users account. Users also came up with the name "tweets" for twitter posts. The idea for the hashtag feature also did not come from twitter employees. In fact, twitter initially rejected the idea for the hashtag feature when it was proposed by a user. Ho

I downloaded the Sims app on my phone. I was able to choose an avatar and customize her skin color,  hair color, makeup, and clothes to make her more like me. In the virtual world, I had my own home that I could customize, but in the beginning, there were only a few options available for furniture. However, I quickly discovered that I could get a job as a barista at a coffee shop. In the image below, you can see my virtual self at work. I can earn 30 simoleons, the currency that the game uses, if I work one shift. I can then use my simoleons to buy items to customize my home. The game fosters creativity by allowing users to do whatever they want in their virtual lives. I can choose to go to work, chat with other avatars, or spend time decorating my home. As you play the game, you unlock new features and earn money that allow you to further customize your experience. Therefore, you can create whatever life you want.
